We are not preparing God’s people on the mission field for the work of the ministry. This is perhaps, more than any other aspect, where we are failing in missions today. In order for the new Christian to be strengthened and encouraged, it is imperative that he is under sound preaching and around good Christian fellowship to develop new relationships and fill the void that will be left after his conversion. We cannot only win them to Christ we have to bring them into a local church where they can grow and mature in their Christian walk. This is why church-planting is so important. In addition to winning the lost, the purpose of missions is to see these new babes in Christ grow in the knowledge and grace of the Lord. Whatever other good he may be doing, winning souls to Christ is the main purpose of his mission. If he is not doing this, he is not fulfilling that for which he was sent forth. First and foremost, the missionary is sent with the goal of reaching the lost. The purpose of missions is given to us in the Scriptures, and it still works today! Therefore, missions involves local churches partnering with missionaries to fulfill the church’s responsibility to evangelize the world. The Great Commission was given to the local church, which is made up of individual members. The Great Commission was not given to missionaries, pastors, Jews, Gentiles or Americans. The ministry of missions is one of co-laboring with others in the ministry. “ And he gave some, apostles and some, prophets and some, evangelists and some, pastors and teachers For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:”
